Wifi -Wireless internet?

Is there any kind of devise that I can plug into my computer to transmit some wifi? Like I know Nintendo has one of those usb devises that connects your nintendo, but I want it for lap tops and other handheld devises! I know my router or something down there has wireless internet connect, but is that the same thing?
