How can a gynecologist tell me if i have vaginismus or an overly thick hymen?

i have been trying to complete my physical relationship with my boyfriend for the past 6 months and even though his finger fits through my , whenever he tries to with his it just doesn't fit!!! it hurts WAY too much no matter HOW much lubricant we use. we have been trying to have for very long and we have concluded that either my hymen is too thick for him to snap or i have vaginismus (look it up on wikipedia if you don't know what it is). so i am going to see a doctor about it. can someone tell me if a gynecologist can help me find out if i have a problem? can someone tell me HOW exactly he or she will go about examining me?? i want to go, but i am scared and want to know what i will go through coz i have never gone to a gynecologist before. thanx for the help...
