The electric field strength as a negative gradient of the electric potential?

My textbook says E=-dV/dr. It also says the potential gradient depends on the direction. I know that it is true for a uniform field only when you go along a field line. So is the electric field strength at a point equal to the potential gradient at that point only when the direction of change of distance is along the field line at that point?
